Klang Study Trip

I went on an educational overseas trip to El Shaddai Refugee Learning Centre in Klang and designed a full day lesson plan filled with hands-on and interactive activities for the children.

The full day lesson plan incorporated numeracy concepts such as one-to-one correspondence, and also included music and movement as well as language and literacy activities.

This experience has taught me to be more flexible and adaptable as we faced difficulties along the way such as space constraint and a lack or resources available. However, with teamwork, flexibility, and quick thinking, we managed to come up with alternative plans to ensure that the lesson carries on smoothly.

For our capstone project, my group and I collaborated with Spright Academy, an after school care centre under Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre for children from low-income backgrounds. For this collaboration, we have designed a three day lesson plan that focuses on creating awareness on the topic of Healthy Eating and Healthy Lifestyle Habits for the children.

Activities planned included a game based on 'My Healthy Plate', a healthy Sandwich Making Activity, Zumba Workout, and an Obstacle Course. The feedback gathered at the end of the three days also helped me to reflect on the activities planned, thus allowing me to plan better lessons in future.

I volunteered at Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre in 2016, where I helped to plan and organise a Family Carnival. On the actual carnival day, I helped out at the various game booths and facilitated the activities.

This event was one of the first experiences that I had in working and interacting with a group of young children. Seeing how carefree children can be and enjoying the littlest things in life despite their family background is a something that encouraged me to join the Early Childhood Sector.

I took part in a Service-Learning Project at Beyond Social Services as a Student Volunteer. Our goal was to provide the children from low-income family backgrounds with an educational and enriching experience through fun and interactive activities. My group and I focused on the topic of Numeracy and designed a live-sized Monopoly Board Game which incorporated math concepts for the children to learn as they play.

I am a regular volunteer at My NoNNa's, a social enterprise that helps persons with special needs and physical disabilities. Through my years of volunteering, I have helped out at numerous occasions such as setting up and managing booths at carnivals, open houses, and other events.

During my free time, I also assist in normal day-to-day operations at the food stalls and cafe, ensuring a smooth operation and providing additional manpower.

I enjoy interacting with persons with special needs and giving them a hand to provide sustainable livelihoods for themselves.
